Water Flosser vs. Regular Dental Floss — Which Is Better?

“Have you been flossing?” Has your preventive dentist or dental hygienist ever asked you that? They do so because they know that a toothbrush cannot totally clean your teeth; you need to use a different method to clean the tight spaces between them. But which method should you use? Traditional dental floss has been around for ages, and it is quite effective, but many people prefer to use a water flosser. Is one better than the other? This blog post highlights some important pros and cons of each option.

Water Flossing: The Pros and Cons

A water flosser is also known as a water jet or oral irrigator. These devices use a pressurized stream of water to dislodge plaque and food debris between the teeth. They offer several advantages:

  • They can clean between overcrowded teeth.
  • They can be very helpful for people with braces.
  • Because they are easy to use, they can be great for people with arthritis or other mobility problems.
  • They can access areas of the mouth that are difficult to reach with regular string floss.

Of course, water flossers also have some downsides. They can be a bit messy, and they are not quite as effective at removing plaque compared to traditional floss. Some models can be rather expensive as well.

Regular Dental Floss: The Pros and Cons

Regular floss is a tried-and-true method for cleaning between the teeth. Its biggest advantages are:

  • It is very effective at removing plaque and food debris.
  • Floss comes in a variety of sizes/textures, so it can be used for all sorts of different mouths/teeth.
  • It is very affordable.

Unfortunately, some people find that floss is difficult to use, and they might not be able to reach some portions of their mouth.

Which Should You Choose?

The best method for cleaning between your teeth depends on your unique circumstances. If you do not have braces or mobility problems, traditional floss may be the best option due to its superior effectiveness. However, water flossing can still be a suitable option for people who struggle to use regular floss.

Feel free to ask your dentist or dental hygienist for tips on which tools/methods you should use to keep your mouth clean. They will be happy to share their expert opinion!
