What Is TMJ Disorder?
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder is a problem that occurs when inflammation or damage affects the joints located on either side of the head at the base of the skull. One of the most common symptoms is pain, and without treatment, it can cause additional harm to the mouth, neck, and head and reduce your overall quality of life.
Symptoms of TMJ Disorder
While pain may be the leading symptom associated with TMJ disorder, other common symptoms include:
- Frequent morning headaches
- Jaw stiffness
- Popping and/or locking of the jaw
- Difficulty opening and closing your mouth
- Stiff neck muscles
Types of TMJ Treatment
To treat TMJ, Dr. Partovi will need to perform a thorough examination to determine the source of your chronic jaw pain. Based on images taken as well as a visual evaluation, she will conclude if you need one or more of the following forms of treatment:
Equilibration / Occlusal Adjustment
If a misaligned bite is the culprit, it may be necessary to alter certain teeth so that you can enjoy a more harmonious bite that functions correctly and comfortably.
Occlusal Splint Treatment
Another method of treating TMJ is with a custom occlusal splint. This is a device that is made to fit inside the mouth and protect teeth from grinding and clenching while also reducing tension on the jaw joints. By minimizing the pressure, you will notice a dramatic difference in how these joints and muscles feel each day when you wake up.
